Welcome to the University of Utah!

We are delighted you are here. Your responsibilities for operations pertaining to common laboratory materials and research related activities at the U, are likely very similar to those at your previous institution. We have specific requirements, support services and programs developed for the following:

  • Biological agents – including microorganisms, plants, animals, biologically derived toxins, blood/cell/tissues
    samples, recombinant and synthetic nucleic acids, etc.
  • Hazardous and potentially hazardous chemicals.
  • Disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Hazardous Materials Shipping.

Most EHS related data and information are managed via the Safety Administrative Management system – also known as SAM.  This system provides tools, templates, and tracking for most of the required elements of a safety program for your area.  Please visit https://oehs.utah.edu/topics/lab-management-system for more information. including how to sign up for an account in the system.

We also encourage you to visit the Research Administration website where you’ll find detailed information regarding
roles and responsibilities for the conduct of research at the University.
